Sourcing Coffee Responsibly

What is responsibly sourced coffee?

Sourcing coffee responsibly

Sourcing coffee responsibly means making sure our coffee meets sustainability standards and that programs are checked by external bodies brings benefits throughout the value chain and supports the future supply of higher quality coffee.

Commitment to responsibly sourced coffee

Our commitment to responsibly sourced coffee is the cornerstone of the NESCAFÉ® Plan. Since 2010, we have increased the amount of responsibly sourced coffee we buy from our suppliers (and farmers) to reach 75% of our global volumes. In New Zealand, all of our NESCAFÉ® coffees are already made from 100% responsibly sourced coffee beans.

Verification and standards

Responsibly sourced coffee is traceable to the group of farms where it was grown and is produced in accordance with sustainability standards that have been validated as equivalent to our Responsible Sourcing Standard. Traceability and compliance are verified by independent organizations, such as 4C Services, the Rainforest Alliance, and Fairtrade, which deploy accredited local auditors to assess a range of factors, including social, environmental, economic, and health and safety conditions at farms.

Positive benefits throughout the value chain

This brings positive benefits throughout the value chain and supports the future supply of higher quality coffee. It gives us clearer visibility about where the coffee came from and how it was grown. At the same time, farmers benefit from accessing markets for sustainable coffee, improving their farming practices, and earning a premium for their coffee. The “win” extends to consumers, who can be assured of a high-quality and sustainably produced product, and can make informed choices about their purchase

Identifying and addressing sustainability challenges

These programs also allow us to identify sustainability challenges that need more targeted interventions. For example, we have identified labour rights hotspots, such as Mexico, and we are working to improve our ability to monitor and detect potential violations. This allows us to take focused remediation actions to support improvements as a required condition to continue commercial relations with those farms.

Partnering with 4C Services

Our partner, 4C Services, has played a major role in making our Responsible Sourcing program more inclusive to smallholder farmers. By managing many 4C farmer units ourselves since the earliest years of the NESCAFÉ® Plan, we have been able to follow the sustainability journey of thousands of our coffee farmers and realise net improvements through each re-certification cycle.

Make choices taste better

nescafé plan
nescafé farmers origins grown respectfully

Where it all began - the NESCAFÉ® Plan

Our favourite crop - coffee - has a rocky history. Over the centuries, it's been smuggled by monks and naval officers, threatened by frost, banned by royalty, and loved by the people. When climate change and political instability joined the ranks of attackers, we wrote the NESCAFÉ® Plan as the first chapter in our attempt to fight for coffee.

Grown Respectfully

The plan was all about respecting farmers, respecting communities, and respecting our planet. Sometimes that respect looked like joining the farmers in researching their crops to make them more resilient. At other times, respect meant inspiring the next generation of coffee farmers with upskilling programs. And, at its most basic, respect always means being able to trace the bean back to the farm and guaranteeing your partners in the field a sustainable income. After 10 years, that plan's become part of our DNA.

Chapter Two: Here's to the makers

"From Colombia to Kenya and Java to Jamaica - it's the ones who make their living from the soil who know how to grow their coffee respectfully. When your whole crop depends on the climate, you care more. No one has to convince these farmers to make choices that protect their coffee and look after the planet. When you know that one day you'll hand your farm over to your sons and daughters, you care more about the kind of tomorrow you're creating. These farmers make choices that respect people - their communities - the next generation of coffee farmers."

We stand with the makers

We've worked with the ones who make choices taste better for over 80 years now. Because of our proximity and collaboration with the farmers across the world's coffee belt of origins, we get to join the dots. The good choices one farmer makes in Brazil to prevent deforestation can help the farmer across the world in Ethiopia do the same. When one farmer in India creates greater biodiversity by intercropping, the coffee grower in Guatemala stands to gain. Our role is to be a catalyst for sharing best practices between the hundreds of thousands of farmers we work with across 15 countries. Now that's a network of know-how that tastes better!

Great tasting coffee begins at its origins And the passionate NESCAFÉ® Farmers Origins growers make it taste even better.

Farmer training

We have a community of 300 NESCAFÉ® coffee-growing experts partnering with more than 700, 000 farmers around the world. It's about joining together to share best practices through training in business and advanced agricultural skills.

Securing farmers' incomes

Growing other crops alongside the coffee trees is a good idea for the coffee and a good idea for diversifying farmer income. Paying a good price for these coffees means there's money left over to invest in building up other income sources too.

Community empowerment

The farmers love coffee. We love coffee. That's why we're all in this together in the endless pursuit of finding new ways to make sure our farming communities are thriving and inspiring the next generation of coffee farmers.

Planting for tomorrow To ensure a future for coffee, farmers need healthy plants. That's why we're always putting our heads together with these farmers to find new ways of improving.

Growing big and strong

We now have eight new and improved varities of coffee plants - they yield a bigger crop and can defend themselves better against pests and diseases in the field.

Using less water

Some of these new coffee varieties need a lot less water. That means they can thrive in drier conditions where water is scarce.

Younger, healthier trees

Think of it as a renovation. The farms are more efficient when we join with the growers in planting new coffee trees. Those younger, healthier trees produce a lot more coffee - and it tastes better too.

And we want to capture all the freshness and goodness of these delicious coffees for you. That's why we use aluminium capsules - because it's the best material for protecting all that great taste born of many little good choice

Every little good choice makes what's in the cup taste better.
