Various types of Italian Black Coffee. Do You Know?

2 min

For coffee enthusiasts, Italy is truly the holy grail. Indisputably, Italy is the home of coffee lovers, coffee connoisseurs and also coffee culture. In Indonesia, Italian coffee is one of the most widely adapted coffees, especially the black coffee and milk coffee variants. This Italian black coffee has become world famous due to its superior taste.

As Italians really value the culture of savoring coffee, they preserve submission to general rules when having Italian coffee or black coffee. They really pay attention to the ratio of the black coffee blend and the best time for drinking the coffee. Italians usually drink cappuccino in the morning, caffe macchiato in the afternoon, and, should they still want caffeine in the evening, a cup of caffe.

Want to know more? Let's read the following article about various types of Italian black coffee.

Caffe

Caffe is the most common type of Italian coffee. Basically, caffe refers to black espresso coffee which is popularly recognized as a small cup of coffee with a strong taste.

Cappuccino

Cappuccino is one of the most global and universal Italian coffees. Cappuccino has a less bitter taste due to its composition of 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk and 1/3 foam. Cappuccino itself is about the perfect balance between these three ingredients.

Caffe Macchiato

Linguistically, caffe macchiato means 'stained coffee', so the drink is literally coffee with a splash of, usually, frothy milk. Caffe macchiato is a type of Italian coffee that is often referred to as milk coffee. Actually, this Italian coffee contains only a small amount of milk, and it could be considered more of a latte art decoration that does not contribute much to the taste.

Caffe Latte

If you order a “latte” in Italy, you will most likely be served a glass or cup of milk, because latte in Italian means “milk”. If you wish some milk in the coffee, you can order a caffe latte, which is a mixture of 1/3 Espresso and 2/3 hot milk with a little foam on top.

Caffe Ristretto

This type of black coffee is a smaller version of the typical Italian caffe – usually found in portions of less than 20ml. Ristretto has a different taste with less bitterness than black espresso coffee.

Caffe Lungo

Caffe Lungo means long or extended coffee. This type of black coffee earns its name due to the extended extraction time required for making an espresso. Caffè lungo is obtained by brewing coffee in more water than usual. Although not as strong, this kind of black coffee has more caffeine than espresso. If you like bitter coffee, you can try Caffe Lungo.

Caffe Doppio

Literally caffe Doppio means 'double coffee.' Caffe Doppio refers to double shot of black coffee served in one cup. Although this coffee is famous in Italy, Italians prefer single shot espresso because they drink coffee in small but frequent portions.

Caffe Americano

Despite its name, caffe Americano is black coffee which is stronger than a regular glass of Americano. A Caffe Americano is made by adding hot water to Espresso to preserve the crema. This blend gives a delicious coffee taste and consistency.

Out of the seven Italian coffee types that we have mentioned, some black coffee variations from Italy are quite popular in Indonesia and often inspire the local coffee processing scene. Have you tried any Italian coffee?
